As March 8th rapidly approaches the Movienight crew eagerly awaits the next selection from Nubs. To date Nubs selections have been quite solid, with the exception of the controversial “Crouching Tiger” fiasco.
On or about November 2, 2005, Nubs began running Oscar winner Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and when the crowd groaned at the bloated kung fu epic, Nubs revealed that even he was not eager to sit through the beautiful, sleep inducing film. This marked the first and only time that a film began rolling in front of the Movienight crew and was not finished. As tempers began to flare the always resourceful Nubby revealed he had an ace up his sleeve in the form of Stephen Chow’s “Kung Fu Hustle.” Despite Movienight Member Ben Davis’ objection to Nubs flagrant abuse of the still unspecified By-Laws, the majority allowed “Kung Fu Hustle,” and even the dour Davis had to admit, Nubs had pulled it off. “Kung Fu Hustle” now stands as the exception that proves the rule.
Nubs followed up with the uncharacteristically sentimental selection “Stand By Me,” which served as a fitting tribute to the four core members of Movienight. But no one, save Ben Wiener who was absent, can dispute that Nubs finest choice to date was the sublime selection of “The In-Laws.” It was called by Eric Coolbaugh “a grand slam” and marked the first screening to include Movienight associate member Justine. It also brought ‘serpentine!’ into the Movienight vernacular.
Wednesday night will mark Nubs first selection since the birth of his son August, and everyone is curious as to how, or if, his new baby will affect his movie selection. We will all know soon enough.
