HOLLYWOOD (AP) -- With no tears, no regrets and no advance warning, Nubs Eisenberg gave himself a day off for the first time in 1 and ½ years and ended Movienight’s ironman streak at 61 Wednesdays and 58 official picks.
“This shouldn't be a sad moment. I look at it as a happy moment, a celebration,” Eisenberg said.
“I don't feel a sense of relief. I don't feel much different. Now that I know what it feels like I don't want to not sit and not watch a movie anymore.”
He said he would return to the starting lineup Wednesday night for Coolbaugh’s pick.
“What Nubs did is so unbelievable. That's one record I do think that will be around for a generation,” baseball commissioner Bud Selig said. “What he's done, he's done a great thing for Movienight.”
“The emphasis should be on the team,” Eisenberg said. “There have been times during the streak when the emphasis was on the streak. I was never comfortable with that. It was time to move the focus back to the team.”
“A lot of people who go to work every day can identify with Nubby” Yankees pitcher David Cone said. "The streak supersedes your puny lives."
It started when George W. Bush was still in his second term as president. and lasted longer than most baseball careers. It was analyzed, criticized and scrutinized.
And now, it's over.
Tooda remarked about what Nubs said. “Just flatly, ‘This is what I'm going to do. I have to work Valentine’s dinner and make lots of money.’”
While it appears no one will ever again play in 61 consecutive Wednesdays, Nubs IS so sure the record will be his for eternity.
“A lot of people think this is a great, great accomplishment,” Eisenberg said. “But I really believe that nobody else will come along and watch more movies and drink Miller Lites while eating pretzels and smoking, because if I can do it, nobody else definitely will. Maybe Buffy. I don't consider myself superhuman and I'm not an iron man physically or mentally, though my wife disagrees.”
“I know of many injuries he's had and he's certainly been able to deal with them in a very, very spectacular way,” Angelos said. “I think he's done the right thing.”
“When you see it happen you wonder how anyone could have done what Nubs has done here,” he added. “I don't believe anyone will ever equal it. I think Nubs has earned his rest.”
The longest current active streak is Netti with 5.
Congratulations, Nubs. Your dedication, commitment, and invention of this loved sport make you the best Movienight Member Ever! Perhaps, the best human being ever! Hip-Hip Hooray!
