It has been a tumultuous year for the stalwart Crew.
In the past year we have lost our dear friend Abbey, the Stucco upon which we shared our first 69 Picks, and perhaps the hardest hit has been the loss of our brother MOFO and his family.
But for all the ravages of our Sophomore year, Movienight has gained many things as well. In Year Two our Membership swelled with the welcome addition of Netti, WildCard Slim, and Buffy to our ranks. Many new faces have become familiar amongst the Crew. Our cannon grew by an incredible 51 Picks, and MOFO helped to incorporate the first Movienight spin-off in California’s Bay Area.
The greatest challenge faced by Movienight in Year Two was finding a permanent home in the wake of the Coolbaugh’s departure. Since losing our Original Back Yard we have shown films in a whopping 5 other venues - 1 on a pool deck of Wiener’s that no longer exists, 3 in a Back Yard Wiener no longer owns, 1 in a Back Yard we are (by the neighbors) no longer welcome, 11 in Tooda’s Crib which is not even close to under the stars, and finally, (Movienight Gods willing) permanently 7 lucky Picks in Nubby’s Back Yard.
If this peripatetic existence has taught us anything, it is that somehow, some way, Movienight will persevere. Through ups and downs we have soldiered forth and it seems as though Movienight cannot be destroyed.
For all the films we have shared together, Movienight remains more about camaraderie than it has ever been about movies.
In the coming weeks, this Blog will feature in-depth exploration of the ups and downs of Year Two. We will have a statistical analysis of the year, a detailed account of our 16 film journey across 5 temporary homes, the re-birth of Movienight on Dicks Street and many other tidbits and tumults from the year we have just finished.
It has been an amazing year, and while we look forward to the new one that begins tonight with Netti’s Pick, this site will continue to devote space to cataloging the ups, downs, and in-betweens of “Movienight: Year Two.”
Enjoy.
