Wiener’s absence paved the way for Buffy’s return to the SELECTOR chair.
Her first Pick, the well-received ‘The Misfits,’ was screened while we were
in the thick of our Indoor Presentations, so ‘True Stories’ marks her first Pick
under the stars.
The film was cued up on a title card that read “This film has been modified as
follows from its original version: it has been formatted to fit your screen.” This
prompted the notoriously picky Tooda to bristle loudly about the SELECTOR’s responsibility to bring the best available print. Coolbaugh and Nubs had both
run afoul of Tooda in this regard, and it seemed Buffy was about to join the list as well. But researching the film the next day, it was discovered that there is no widescreen version of the film. It was originally shot in the 3:4 aspect ratio, hence the disclaimer at the beginning was the only thing wrong with the print.
John Goodman returns here for the first time (not counting his uncredited work as the newsreel announcer in ‘The Hudsucker Proxy’) since his Movienight debut in our inaugural Selection ‘The Big Lebowski.’ David Byrne, Swoosie Kurtz, and the late Spalding Gray all debut with this Selection.
“I'm 6'3", and maintain a very consistent panda bear shape.”
