Week Two of our “So Bad, It’s Good” rotation found Tooda stepping up to the plate with this, his third Selection (‘The Thing,’ ‘Big Trouble in Little China’) from writer/director/god-awful composer John Carpenter.
The Crew seemed pleased with this effort, and it’s hard not to love a film which features a fifteen minute fist fight over putting on a pair of sunglasses.
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper will not likely be seen again.
“I came here to kick ass and chew bubble-gum - and I’m all out of bubble-gum.”

There are a handful of films that take me back to my youth in a very warm and friendly way, and ‘They Live’ is one of them. I think I was 15 when I saw it in the theater, and that fistfight in the alley – between Roddy Piper and David Keith or Keith David – man, that just ranks up there with losing your virginity. Roddy Piper made me want to be a drifter, just like him.
And ‘They Live’ was a tasty choice for the ‘So Bad It’s Good’ season. It falls under that genre of “I would never really rent it, but if it was on channel 13 on a Saturday, you’d better be damned sure I sit and watch all of it.” And this is one of those films that would be an excellent candidate for a remake, but it would most likely lose some of that magic that Roddy and Carpenter brought to the screen.
