Brandon Comments:

An indoors presentation during summer is always something that gives one pause. For a film to work indoors, that film should have an internal feeling: a film that doesn’t show too much blue sky or too many long highways, clouds or widescreen sunsets. And for these reasons, Tooda’s Selection of ‘Marty’ was very effective.

It was a small Crew that night – four of us by film’s end – so we decided to forego the lengthy setup and journey into West Hollywood, and we stayed at Tooda’s place with the widescreen. And although I may bitch about old classic films, and I may always choose a recent color film for my Selection, I really do enjoy having to sit through a 40s or 50s classic at MovieNight (on occasion). ‘Marty’ is a cute film; a little romantic and sappy but realistic for the time. The movie is chock full of plain, homely people, which is something you just don’t see enough of in older films. And the main theme here is “love,” which is the case with almost any film before 1959, but ‘Marty’ set it up nicely and let it flow gracefully to its happy, hand-in-hand climax.

I, personally, dislike romantic films because I, personally, dislike romance. I will not share my bias opinion in this review. But I will share that 50% of the viewing audience had fallen asleep within 40 minutes of the film’s start, including the Selector himself. So, maybe it’s not just me that dislikes the genre of romance when I’m drinking and partaking
